A trilateral cooperation agreement to address desertification was formally signed in China by Iran’s Plan and Budget Organization, University College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (University of Tehran), and the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Prof. Kambiz Pourtahmasi, Associate-Rector for Research & Technology at University College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Tehran, attended the official signing ceremony.

Prof. Pourtahmasi emphasized that the partnership focuses on scientific collaboration to combat desertification. He highlighted China’s extensive experience in stabilizing decertified areas in northern regions, alongside Iran’s valuable achievements in this field. The agreement includes plans to initiate one or two pilot projects in Iran aimed at converting desert lands into economically viable areas that enhance food security and environmental sustainability.

The agreement calls for expanded scientific exchange and the rapid development of a joint action plan. Iran’s Plan and Budget Organization has pledged its commitment to support these efforts in coordination with the Natural Resources and Watershed Management Organization.

Prof. Pourtahmasi also stressed the importance of adopting a new perspective on desert areas, viewing them not solely as threats but as opportunities for agricultural expansion and national food and ecological security. He further advocated for allocating a dedicated budget line to support academic research and international collaboration on desertification issues.

This agreement marks a significant step toward leveraging international expertise to tackle urgent environmental challenges facing Iran.
